JOB SUMMARY: The Occupational Therapist organizes and conducts occupational therapy programs for the agency to facilitate rehabilitation. In addition, he/she directs client participation in selected tasks to restore, reinforce, and enhance performance. The Occupational Therapist facilitates the learning of those skills and functions essential for adaptation and productivity, in order to diminish or correct pathology.

Essential Functions:

  • Evaluates clients, develops appropriate treatment goals and methods, implements the occupational therapy treatment plan, and completes all related documentation and record keeping regarding these services; this includes application of therapeutic techniques in areas such as cognitive skills, muscle strength, coordination endurance, mobility, perceptual abilities, sensory awareness, sitting and standing tolerance, balance, activities of daily living, joint protection, work simplification, orientation, and psychological functioning.
  • Designs and fits adaptive devices and trains clients in the use of adaptive devices including splints and orthotics.
  • Selects appropriate activities suited to the individual’s physical and mental capacity, intelligence level and interest.
  • Consults with other members of the rehabilitation team to select the most appropriate activity program consistent with the needs and capabilities of each client.
  • Instructs client in the skills and techniques required for participation in activities and evaluates client progress, attitudes, and behavior as related to rehabilitative potential.
  • Adapts program according to the needs of individual client.
  • Attends and contributes to client care, staffing conferences and other related meetings.
  • Conducts training programs and participates in training medical, nursing and other personnel in occupational therapy techniques and objectives.
  • Requisitions supplies and equipment as necessary.
  • Cleans, maintains, identifies and reports the need for repair of equipment as necessary.
  • Supervises supportive personnel in accordance with state and professional standards.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • The Occupational Therapist must be licensed and/or eligible for licensure as required in the state of practice.

Essential Job Duties:

  • Prepare patients for radiologic procedures. Escort patients to dressing and x-ray rooms, provide verbal and/or written instructions and assist patients in positioning body parts to be radiographed. Ensure patient care, safety, and comfort during exam. Complete necessary paperwork for image interpretation and reporting results, communicate concerns with the radiologists, providers, or radiology director
  • Operate radiologic equipment to produce images of the body for diagnostic purposes. Position radiologic equipment and adjust controls to set exposure time and distance according to specification of examination. Take x-rays following established radiologic requirements and regulations to ensure patient care and safety. Understand the basic principle of radiation exposure by adjusting equipment on individual patient basis.   • Use radiation safety measures and protection devices to ensure safety of patients and team members.

  • Ensure radiologic equipment remains in working order. Report equipment malfunctions appropriately to Manager or Director.
  • Perform related administrative duties including completing necessary forms and paperwork pertaining to examinations; charge for procedure and supplies; input related data in Hospital Information System.
  • Patient transport as necessary.
  • Perform and maintain competency as assigned.

Job Summary:
Responsible for supervision of therapy centers (span of control is between 1-3 centers) including treatment of a full patient case load. Ensures compliance to all policies and procedures. Essential Functions (Management):

Essential Functions (continued):

  • Utilize seclusion and restraint procedures with an understanding of the need for modification inregard to smaller body sizes of adolescents, abandonment issues and the history of physical and/or sexual abuse issue.
  • Act as a resource to other staff in regard to the Adolescent Patient Programs.
  • Specific Standards for the Care of Adult Patients Ages 19 through 64
  • Specific Standards for the Care of Geriatric Patients Ages 65 and older
  • Maintain a knowledge of the developmental tasks and sociological theories of aging.
  • Utilize theoretical concepts to guide the effective practice of gerontological health care and behavioral care.
  • Gather the appropriate information from the patient, family and interdisciplinary team and use therapeutic judgments based on knowledge of gerontological health/behavioral care practices to develop a comprehensive plan of care.
  • Utilize interventions based on gerontological theory to restore patient’s functional capabilities and to prevent complications and excess disability.
  • Maintain a complete knowledge of treatments, medications and side effects of such in the geriatric age group.
  • Specific Standards for the Care of Chemically Dependent Patients

Qualifications

  • Education: Graduate from an accredited school of professional nursing required or equivalent combination of education and experience in psychiatric nursing management; Bachelor’s Degree preferred.
  • Experience: A minimum of three (3) years’ experience in a psychiatric health-care facility.
  • Licensure: Currently licensed to practice by the Massachusetts Board of Nursing
